As part of the two-day conference ‘The Battle of Algiers’ at 60, taking place on 6 and 7 November 2026 at St John’s College, Cambridge, and focusing on Gillo Pontecorvo’s film La battaglia di Algeri (The Battle of Algiers) (1966) to mark its 60th anniversary, Julian Volz will present a paper on 7 November entitled:

Presentifying Pontecorvo: Uses of The Battle of Algiers in Frank Castorf’s Faust (2017)
Panel 6, 11.15–12.45: Iterations and reverberations

The paper examines the use of film samples from Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers in Frank Castorf’s staging of Faust at Berlin’s Volksbühne in 2017. Particular attention will be paid to Castorf’s transposition of Pontecorvo’s film images into a theatre space of the present, as well as to the connections and tensions that emerge through the interaction between the projected film samples and the actors on stage.

The paper approaches this artistic method as a form of presentification, which should not be misconstrued as an artistic-historiographical approach, but as a practice that generates meaning in and for the present precisely through its distance from and difference to the source material, namely Pontecorvo’s images.

Im Rahmen der zweitägigen Konferenz ‘The Battle of Algiers’ at 60, die am 6. und 7. November 2026 am St. John’s College in Cambridge stattfindet und Gillo Pontecorvos Film The Battle of Algiers (Die Schlacht um Algier, 1966) anlässlich seines 60. Jahrestags in den Blick nimmt, hält Julian Volz am 7. November den Vortrag:

Der Vortrag beschäftigt sich mit der Verwendung von Ausschnitten aus Gillo Pontecorvos The Battle of Algiers in Frank Castorfs Faust Inszenierung an der Berliner Volksbühne im Jahr 2017. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt Castorfs Überführung von Pontecorvos Filmbildern in einen Theaterraum der Gegenwart sowie den Verbindungen und Spannungen, die durch die Interaktion zwischen den eingespielten Filmsamplen und den Schauspieler*innen auf der Bühne entstehen. Das dabei eingesetzte künstlerische Verfahren soll in dem Vortrag als eine Form der Vergegenwärtigung (Presentification) verstanden werden, die nicht als künstlerisch-historiographische Herangehensweise misszuverstehen ist, sondern die gerade durch ihre Distanz und Differenz zu dem Ausgangsmaterial Bedeutung in der und für die Gegenwart produziert.
