Institute – Mission
Mission
The German Center for Art History Paris (DFK Paris) is an independent art-historical research institute located in the heart of Paris. Since autumn 2022, it has been under the direction of Professor Peter Geimer.
In its programming, the DFK Paris conceives of itself as a forum for scholarly exchange and transcultural encounter. The researchers employed at the institute and those supported by fellowships bring French and German scholarly traditions into dialogue with international perspectives, using this exchange as a starting point for interdisciplinary research on the art of both countries within their global entanglements.
Art history from the Middle Ages to the present day falls within the purview of the institute, being addressed in research projects, support programs for early career scholars, and academic events as well as made accessible to a broader public through publication series. Through its research fields and rotating biennial themes, the DFK Paris engages directly with current debates in the discipline. Its specialized library and on-site administrative services lend researchers substantial support.
The DFK Paris was established in 1997 and is financed by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. Since 2006, it has been part of the federally affiliated Foundation of German Humanities Institutes Abroad, which was renamed the Max Weber Foundation in 2012 and maintains additional partner institutes worldwide.
