Research Profile
The DFK Paris conceives of itself as a locus of fundamental research in art history from an interdisciplinary perspective. As a German institution in France, it provides a space for scholarly interchange between the two countries while bringing a transcultural orientation to this dialogue. The research commitments of the DFK Paris extend beyond projects on specific periods and genres of art history and the editing of historical sources; they also include critical reflection on the very concepts, methods, and modes of practice around which the discipline centres itself. Thus, rather than merely responding to current developments in the field, the institute actively contributes to shaping them. The ideal working conditions available at the DFK Paris enable focused, sustained, and in-depth research free from predetermined project timelines or targets. Public conferences, along with working formats such as reading seminars and workshops, also uphold this purpose.
Complementing the individual emphases of the scholars are the overarching research fields Art Theory, Media of Art History, Transculturality, and Art History as a History of Knowledge. These are not intended to be self-contained but rather deliberately emphasize mutual connections and slippages. Alongside these enduring research areas, rotating biennial themes allow the institute to respond flexibly to current topics and developments. Opportunities are also available, at the invitation of the directorate, for visiting scholars to undertake a research stay at the DFK Paris for a set period.
