Book Launch: Auflösungs/erscheinungen. Positionen zum fotografischen Verschwinden

FUNDUS volume 223, edited by Dennis Jelonnek and Aïcha Revellat
DISTANZ Verlag Berlin, 2026

The first volume in the relaunched FUNDUS series turns to disappearance as a fundamental dimension of the photographic. It brings together contributions that examine photography as a material object, technical image medium, carrier of information, and metaphorical space. They ask about the documentary power of photographic images as social and political testimony, examine the conditions of their visibility on social media, trace the afterlife of outdated photographic processes and apparatuses, and consider the representation of time and staged disappearance in film.

The volume grew out of two workshops held in July and October 2025 at the German Center for Art History Paris (DFK Paris) and at eikones – Center for the Theory and History of the Image in Basel. The aim of the shared discussions was to develop as wide a range of positions as possible and to explore different ways of engaging scholarly with photographic and filmic techniques today, without tying the contributions to a single understanding of disappearance.

The panel discussion brings together Rebecca Wilton (DISTANZ Verlag, Publishing Director and Head of the Photography Program), the editors Dennis Jelonnek (DFK Paris) and Aïcha Revellat (University of Basel), the artist Samuel Hodge (Sydney), and the authors Katja Müller-Helle (Das Technische Bild, Humboldt University Berlin) and David Bucheli (eikones, University of Basel). They will discuss central questions of the volume.

The panel discussion will be held in English. A drinks reception will follow, and we warmly invite you to join us.
