Peter Geimer – The Art of Comparison. What Transpires Among Images?
As part of the Cátedra del Prado 2026 Colloquium “Vice versa. An Exchange of Roles and Practices Between Artists and Art Historians”, Peter Geimer will give a lecture at the Museo del Prado in Madrid:
The Art of Comparison. What Transpires Among Images?
All art history systems are comparison-based. The original is compared with the forgery; iconographical details are compared with styles. It is comparison alone that allows to make manifest the points in common among images — or the differences between them. Artists also compare, although in a different manner, and with a different aim. Based on selected models, among others Aby Warburg, André Malraux, Wolfgang Tillmanns, the conference addresses an aesthetics of comparison.
