In the 1970s, a period of profound change occurred within the French scene of fine arts learning. The establishment of the first university departments of arts plastiques occurred circa 1970, thereby creating an alternative for students in addition to the Beaux-Arts School. This paper will examine the history of one of the first fine arts departments in a university, namely Saint Charles’s center in the Sorbonne. I will show how this department was created with the intention of including artists from different parts of the world, both as teachers and students. The present study will examine the manner in which Lygia Clark contributed to the revitalisation of pedagogical practices that had previously been shaped by the classical studio model of the Beaux-Arts School. 

Déborah Laks is a researcher at CNRS. Her research focuses on transmission and pedagogy via reflections on memory. She specifically researched Christian Boltanski and Daniel Spoerri’s teaching activity as well as alternative teaching in Scotland in the 1970s. She is currently leading a project entitled “Education through the Imaginarium. History of art education in France, 1968-1999”. Her publications include Des déchets pour mémoire. L’utilisation de matériaux de récupération par les nouveaux réalistes (1955-1975) (Presses du réel, 2018), and Anecdotomania. Daniel Spoerri sur Daniel Spoerri (Beaux-Arts de Paris éditions, 2021). She has organized numerous symposiums, including “Transmission and Gender” with AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research & Exhibitions in 2020. She is teaching at Sciences Po Paris.

Cet événement est organisé en collaboration avec le groupe de travail « Théorie de l’art et production artistique à l’heure de la migration globale » de l’Ulmer Verein (AG Kunsttheorie und Kunstproduktion im Zeichen globaler Migration). Se tenant au DFK Paris sur deux jours, cette réunion annuelle a pour objectif de constituer les deux sous-groupes « Antiracisme et post-migration » et « Écologies relationnelles ». Le programme inclura également un atelier débat (en allemand) intitulé « Penser les relations. Défis méthodologiques pour l’histoire de l’art » ainsi qu’une rencontre (en anglais) avec Vir Andres Hera, artiste et cinéaste, animée par Morgan Labar, directeur de l’École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon.
